How to dress your baby’s cot

When dressing a cot, several things must be taken into account, not only in the aesthetics terms, but also in the quality of fabrics and baby’s safety.

The fabrics used must be 100% natural, especially in the first months of life in order to prevent allergies.

There are duvets, fitted bed sheets, mattress pads and pillows made of 100% cotton fabrics and some of which also include antibacterial or anti-dust mite treatments that last the washing machine, ensuring the maximum hygiene and protection for our baby.

The mattress protector has to be waterproof to protect it from diaper leakage, spit-up,… but also must be made of a soft, breathable fabric that avoids heat and sweat and makes our baby feel as comfortable as possible, ensuring a proper rest.

Mattresses covered in plastic are very uncomfortable and make our baby sweat, make noises every time the baby moves and can cause allergies.

The most appropriate is a two-sided mattress, one for winter lined with wool and the other one lined with coconut fiber so we ensure freshness during summer, covered with the corresponding mattress protector.

The function of a cot protector is preventing the baby from putting his head, legs or arms between the crosspieces and therefore getting hurt. This protector should also be made of high quality 100% natural fabric, in order to avoid any possible allergy and dust accumulation, as dust mites can also cause allergy.

Another important safety issue is making sure that the size of mattress adjusts the cot size in order to prevent leaving a gap between the crosspieces and the mattress in which the baby could be trapped.

Finally, make sure all the protectors and bed sheets are well placed to prevent your baby from suffocating.

Parents with children in a year and a half to three years are asking, “It’s time to move my child from a crib to a toddler bed?Maybe because we see that the crib is too small or because we expect another deal baby, surely it’s time to make this decision.

But how do we know it’s the right time?

The first symptom is when we see our son wanted to leave on their own in the crib or the child is uncomfortable in the crib. Sometimes it is as easy as our son tells us, “Mom, I want a big boy bed!”

Create a pleasant sleep environment

The most important thing is to prepare an environment of adequate rest and avoid the child takes it as a moment of displacement, we could get negative. Ideally, the child lives change as a great experience where he is the protagonist.

It is vitally important to create an environment where children feel comfortable and an environment where he can sleep properly every night.

The first important decision is: What kind of bed is the best? A child’s bed or crib mattress baby mattress or directly to a bed with mattress adult

The decision is in our hands, one is not better than the other, depend on what we believe may be more favorable for our son from the available resources (economic, space ..).

Whichever option we choose is important that the mattress is not synthetic fabrics. Without doubt, always bet on 100% natural materials.

Childproof: What we have to remove, put, covered or protected to keep the child in an environment as safe as possible?

Mattress Protector

A mattress protector is essential to a time of change as important as changing the bed. Mattress protectors are elements that will protect the bed of liquids, dirt and other potential damage to the mattress of a toddler.

Gone are the old and mattress protectors, these elements noisy, we were getting overheated and sweaty and chased us all night, protecting the mattress but not the rest of the child. The best practice would be a breathable waterproof mattress cover or a breathable waterproof anti-dustmite mattress protector, which shall at all times a dry and free of hot, sweaty and noisy, which prevents fluids from reaching the mattress, but allows the skin to breathe .

Remember, it is best to accustom your child to a sleep routine and will be much easier getting used to.

In the previous post we explained the importance of sleep for our babies. However, there are some factors that can disturb our baby’s sleep, so necessary and which should always be appropriate in order to be healthy.

There are 6 important factors which we should always try to avoid:

• Our baby is still hungry because he didn’t get enough food.

• An accumulation of wind which turns into stomach-ache, caused by an incorrect ingest of the food.

• Any kind of physical pain such as ear ache, a cold or flu, sore skin because of the nappy, etc.

• He feels uncomfortable because he has wet the nappy or even the cot. In this case, we have to change the baby and put it again in the cot in which, if necessary, we will also have changed the sheets.

• He just wakes up and he feels alone. In this case we will have to stay with him until he falls asleep again, but we should never take him out of the cot, as if we do, he won’t be in the mood to go back easily.

• Because of an excess of noise or light.

Protect your babay’s rest (Part 1)

As we have already mentioned in previous posts, a person’s health also depends on the quantity of hours of rest and on the quality of that rest. When talking about babies or children, sleep is also a key factor in the protection of their health. The initial stage of life is precisely the one in which we need the most quantity of hours of sleep.

The resting hours are a part of babies’ growth. This means that these hours are not a kind of “hibernation” in which babies are stuck in time, without developing. When sleeping our baby continues growing and developing, therefore we have to respect this moment as much as the feeding moment.

Babies rest is placid and they can sleep up to 20 hours a day (and even more in the first weeks of life), with the obvious breaks for feeding, whenever he doesn’t feel any discomfort nor sick.

Babies need a lot of tranquillity and silence in the house to sleep the quantity of hours they need to sleep without any start. Furthermore, if during the day there is many people visiting our home (especially children playing around noisily), in the night our baby will have more difficulties to fall asleep, as he will be excited.

It is important that, both when going to sleep as when waking up, our baby is surrounded by happy expressions, almost festive. Specifically when going to sleep, it is important that we give our baby a warm and affective treatment, so his rest is calm and therefore he suffers no starts.

It is unusual waking up a baby because he needs to be fed, as usually some minutes before the tour they start babbling slightly, which anticipate the need of food. Many times, they can even fall asleep while they are being fed. If this happens, whenever we consider they have already had enough, it is not advisable waking them up.

In the following post, we will explain some factors that may disturb our baby’s rest.
